Which golfer is the only one to have won three U.S. Opens in a row?

The story behind the answer

Willie Anderson is the only golfer to win three U.S. Opens in a row, taking the titles from 1903 through 1905.

Anderson’s streak began at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey in 1903, where he defeated David Brown in a playoff after both finished at 307. In 1904, Anderson won at Glen View Club in Illinois by five strokes, and he completed the run at Myopia Hunt Club in Massachusetts in 1905 with a two-stroke victory over Alex Smith.

The achievement is especially notable because Anderson won four U.S. Opens overall: 1901, 1903, 1904 and 1905. His total was later matched by Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus, but none of them equaled his three-year winning sequence.

Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka came close in different eras, but neither won a third consecutive U.S. Open. Anderson’s record belongs to the championship’s early professional era and remains unmatched more than a century later.
