Which golfer co-founded the Masters Tournament with Clifford Roberts?

The story behind the answer

Bobby Jones co-founded the Masters Tournament with Clifford Roberts.

Jones was one of golf’s greatest amateur players and completed the sport’s celebrated Grand Slam in 1930 before retiring from competitive golf. He later helped create Augusta National Golf Club on the site of a former plant nursery in Augusta, Georgia. His business associate Clifford Roberts provided important financial and organizational support.

Together, Jones and Roberts launched the tournament in 1934. It was initially called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, because Jones disliked the grander “Masters” name. The official title changed to the Masters Tournament in 1939, although “the Masters” had already become common usage.

Jones also co-designed Augusta National with architect Alister MacKenzie and played in the event’s early editions, largely in a ceremonial role. The other options were major golfers, but none co-founded the tournament with Roberts. Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, and Ben Hogan were competitors, not the event’s founding partner.
