Which god is the god of the sea and wind?

The story behind the answer

The Norse god associated with the sea and wind is Njord, Old Norse Njörðr.

Njörðr belongs to the Vanir, a divine group associated with fertility, prosperity, and natural abundance. In the Prose Edda, he lives at Nóatún and governs the movement of winds. He can calm both the sea and fire, so sailors and fishermen invoke him for safe journeys, favorable conditions, and successful catches.

His influence extends beyond weather. Njörðr is also linked with wealth, fishing, seafaring, and fertile fields, making him a god of the practical benefits that support coastal communities. He is the father of Freyr and Freyja, though the surviving texts identify their mother only as Njörðr’s unnamed sister.

Njörðr’s marriage to the giantess Skaði is one of Norse mythology’s famous mismatches. They could not agree where to live: he preferred the sea at Nóatún, while she favored the mountains. Njörðr is often confused with Ægir, a jötunn who personifies or hosts the sea, but Ægir is not the same deity.
