Which goaltender has won the most Vezina Trophies?

The story behind the answer

Jacques Plante has won the most Vezina Trophies, with seven victories.

Plante earned six of his Vezinas with the Montreal Canadiens, largely during the club's dominant run in the 1950s and early 1960s. He won five consecutively from 1955–56 through 1959–60, then added another with Montreal in 1961–62 and a seventh with the St. Louis Blues in 1968–69.

A common mix-up comes from the Vezina Trophy's changing definition. Before 1981–82, it went to the goaltender or goaltenders whose team allowed the fewest regular-season goals. Since then, it has been voted to the league's best individual goaltender. Dominik Hasek has the most Vezina wins under the modern system, with six, but Plante remains the overall record-holder.

Plante was also a six-time Stanley Cup champion and helped popularize the goaltender's mask after refusing to play without one following a facial injury in 1959.
