Which goaltender has the most career shutouts?

The story behind the answer

Martin Brodeur has the most career shutouts by an NHL goaltender. He recorded 125 shutouts in the regular season, the recognized NHL career record, during a 22-season career spent primarily with the New Jersey Devils.

Brodeur’s shutout total reflects both exceptional consistency and extraordinary durability. He appeared in 1,266 regular-season games, more than any other NHL goaltender, and helped the Devils win three Stanley Cup championships in 1995, 2000, and 2003. His style combined strong positioning with puck-handling skills that helped New Jersey’s defense begin transitions quickly.

A common source of confusion is whether playoff shutouts are included. Brodeur also holds the record for career playoff shutouts, with 24, and has 149 shutouts when regular-season and playoff games are combined. Terry Sawchuk, Dominik Hasek, and Patrick Roy were all legendary goaltenders, but none surpassed Brodeur’s regular-season total.
