Which giant stole Thor's hammer?

The story behind the answer

Thrym, also written Þrymr or Thrymr, is the giant who stole Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, in Norse mythology. The theft is the central event of the poem Þrymskviða, in which Thrym hides the hammer and demands Freyja as his bride in exchange for returning it.

When Freyja refuses, Thor disguises himself as the bride and travels to the giants’ land with Loki acting as his attendant. Thrym is fooled by Thor’s bridal clothing, despite the supposed bride’s enormous appetite and drinking. Loki explains these oddities away as signs of Freyja’s longing for the wedding.

During the ceremony, Thrym orders Mjolnir brought out to bless the marriage. Once the hammer is placed in Thor’s lap, the disguise is abandoned. Thor seizes the weapon and kills Thrym, then attacks the assembled giants.

Hrungnir is another giant famously connected with Thor, but he is killed in a separate contest. Fárbauti is chiefly known as Loki’s father, while Suttungr is linked to the mead of poetry.
