Which giant is the father of the goddess Skadi?

The story behind the answer

Thjazi, also spelled Þjazi or Thiazi, is the giant who fathered the goddess Skadi in Norse mythology. The Prose Edda identifies him as a jötunn and names Skadi as his daughter.

Thjazi is best known for abducting Idunn, the goddess who keeps the apples that preserve the gods’ youth. He first appears in eagle form and forces Loki to lure Idunn out of Asgard. Once she is captured, the gods begin to age, so Loki must rescue her. Using a falcon cloak borrowed from Freyja, Loki retrieves Idunn, while Thjazi pursues them toward Asgard and is killed by the gods.

Skadi then arrives armed and seeking compensation for her father’s death. The gods offer her a husband and other reparations, including the placement of Thjazi’s eyes in the heavens as stars. Different poems assign parts of this act to different figures, including Odin, Thor, and Loki.

Thjazi is also associated with Þrymheim, the mountain home later occupied by Skadi.
