Which Germs singer died in 1980 at age 22?

The story behind the answer

Which Germs singer died in 1980 at age 22? Darby Crash died at 22.

Crash was the stage name of Jan Paul Beahm, who co-founded the Los Angeles punk band the Germs with his longtime friend Pat Smear. He had previously performed as Bobby Pyn before adopting the name Darby Crash, and he became known for his confrontational performances and volatile stage persona.

The Germs broke up in May 1980 after their final regular show, but briefly reunited for a performance at the Starwood in December. On 7 December 1980, Crash died by suicide from an intentional heroin overdose in Los Angeles. He was 22 years old.

Crash is sometimes confused with Pat Smear because Smear was also a founding Germs member and later achieved wider fame with Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Lorna Doom was the Germs’ bassist, not their singer, while Darby Gould is not the band’s frontman.
