Pichelsteiner is a German stew combining several meats with potatoes and vegetables in one pot.
The dish is traditionally prepared with different meats, commonly beef, pork, and mutton or veal, together with potatoes, carrots, onions, and other vegetables. The ingredients are layered or arranged in a pot and slowly cooked with liquid until tender.
Pichelsteiner is especially associated with the Bavarian Forest and the town of Regen, where a festival dedicated to the dish is held. Its one-pot preparation made it practical for communal cooking and outdoor gatherings.
It differs from Labskaus, the northern German dish based on salted meat, potatoes, and other ingredients. Pichelsteiner is also not a version of Sauerbraten, whose defining feature is marinated beef.
