Which German scenic route is called the "Romantic Road"?

The story behind the answer

Germany’s scenic route called the “Romantic Road” is the Romantische Straße.

The Romantische Straße is a themed tourist route running for roughly 413 kilometres from Würzburg in the north to Füssen near the Austrian border. It passes through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, connecting historic towns, rural landscapes, churches and castles rather than functioning as one continuously numbered motorway.

The route was created in 1950 as a tourism initiative intended to make West Germany attractive to visitors again after the Second World War. Early international visitors included American occupation personnel and their families. Its name emphasizes picturesque historic scenery, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, the Wieskirche and Neuschwanstein Castle.

The route is often confused with Germany’s Wine Route, Fairy-Tale Route or Castle Road, all separate themed itineraries. “Romantische Straße” is simply the German name of the internationally marketed Romantic Road.
