Which German driver won the WRC drivers' title in both 1980 and 1982?

Walter Röhrl won the World Rally Championship drivers’ title in both 1980 and 1982. The German driver achieved his first championship in a Fiat 131 Abarth and his second in an Opel Ascona 400.

Röhrl’s 1980 campaign included victories at Rallye Monte Carlo, Rally Portugal, Rally Argentina and Rally Sanremo. He combined speed with exceptional consistency, taking the title ahead of fellow German-speaking rally star Hannu Mikkola.

In 1982, Röhrl faced a formidable challenge from Audi’s Michèle Mouton, who became the first woman to win a WRC event and finished second in the championship. Röhrl secured the title with Opel, despite Audi’s Quattro becoming the manufacturers’ champion that season.

His two championships were separated by the 1981 season, when Ari Vatanen won the drivers’ title. Röhrl ultimately recorded 14 WRC victories and is widely regarded as one of rallying’s greatest drivers.
