Which German band released the pirate-themed album “Port Royal” in 1988? Running Wild.
Port Royal is the fourth studio album by Running Wild, the German heavy metal band led by vocalist and guitarist Rolf Kasparek. It was released on 26 September 1988 after being recorded that June at Sky Trak Studio in Berlin.
The album expanded the pirate imagery introduced on Running Wild’s 1987 release Under Jolly Roger. Port Royal helped establish the band’s enduring pirate-metal identity, although its music is also commonly classified as heavy metal or power metal. The title refers to Port Royal, the former Jamaican pirate haven associated with the Golden Age of Piracy.
Several songs develop historical or seafaring themes. “Calico Jack” concerns the English pirate John Rackham, while “Conquistadores” became one of the album’s best-known tracks and received airplay on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. The record’s pirate concept is why it is sometimes confused with Under Jolly Roger, the earlier album that introduced the theme.
Running Wild’s lineup on the album included Kasparek, guitarist Majk Moti, bassist Jens Becker, and drummer Stefan Schwarzmann. The band later followed Port Royal with Death or Glory in 1989.
