Which German Autobahn is the longest in length?

The story behind the answer

Which German Autobahn is the longest in length? The answer is A7, officially Bundesautobahn 7.

A7 runs for about 963 kilometres from the Danish border near Harrislee in Schleswig-Holstein to Füssen at the Austrian border in Bavaria. It crosses six German states: Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Its north–south route makes it one of Germany’s principal long-distance corridors.

Construction occurred in stages rather than as one continuous project. Several sections date from the prewar Reichsautobahn programme, while major northern and central sections opened during the 1950s and 1960s. The final connection to the Austrian border was completed in 2009, closing the last major gap near Füssen.

A common mix-up is confusing A7 with A1, which is also exceptionally long and important. A7 is additionally notable for the 1,498-metre Rader High Bridge over the Kiel Canal and the New Elbe Tunnel beneath the Elbe in Hamburg.
