Which game introduced the Assassin’s Creed series’ Animus technology to players?

The story behind the answer

The original Assassin’s Creed game introduced the series’ Animus technology to players.

In the 2007 game, Desmond Miles is taken by Abstergo Industries and placed in the Animus. The device lets him experience the genetic memories of his ancestor Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad. This framework allows the story to move between a modern-day science-fiction plot and a historical adventure during the Third Crusade.

Later games expand the Animus concept with additional users, portable systems, and increasingly flexible memory simulations. The Animus is therefore not simply a time machine: the series presents it as technology that reads inherited memories encoded in DNA. Assassin’s Creed II deepens the modern-day storyline, but it did not introduce the device or the core memory premise.
