The archerfish is known for spitting jets of water to knock insects from vegetation.
Archerfish belong to the genus Toxotes and hunt insects above the water. By shaping the roof of the mouth and using the tongue, a fish can create a forceful jet that strikes prey on leaves or branches. The insect then falls into the water, where the archerfish eats it.
The fish must compensate for refraction at the water surface, which can make an above-water target appear displaced. Studies have shown that archerfish can also learn to recognize visual targets. Several species live in freshwater, although the group also includes fish from brackish mangrove environments.
