What is the scientific name of the giant gourami, a large freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia?
Answer
Osphronemus goramy
Answer
Osphronemus goramy
The scientific name of the giant gourami is Osphronemus goramy.
This species is one of the largest members of the gourami group and is native to freshwater environments in mainland and island Southeast Asia. It has been introduced elsewhere for aquaculture and food production.
Giant gourami possess a labyrinth organ, an air-breathing structure that lets them use atmospheric oxygen when water is warm, stagnant or poorly oxygenated. They are commonly farmed and can also be kept as large ornamental fish.
The giant gourami is not the same fish as the three-spot gourami, Trichopodus trichopterus, a much smaller aquarium species. Nor should it be confused with the kissing gourami, Helostoma temminckii. Adult giant gourami develop a deep body and may show a pronounced forehead and thick lips.
