Which freshwater fish is also called the freshwater butterflyfish?
Answer
Pantodon buchholzi
Answer
Pantodon buchholzi
Pantodon buchholzi is the freshwater fish also called the freshwater butterflyfish. It is a surface-dwelling African species whose large, wing-like pectoral fins inspired its common name.
The freshwater butterflyfish lives in slow-moving or still waters in West and Central Africa. Its upturned mouth is adapted for taking prey from the surface, and it commonly feeds on insects and other small animals that fall onto the water.
Despite its appearance, it is not related to marine butterflyfish. It is also distinct from freshwater hatchetfish, another group of surface-oriented aquarium fish. The species is a member of the family Pantodontidae and is the only living species in its genus, Pantodon.
