Which French village was Joan of Arc’s birthplace?

The story behind the answer

Joan of Arc was born in the French village of Domrémy.

Domrémy was a rural settlement in the duchy of Bar, near the frontier between territories influenced by France and Burgundy. Joan was born there around 1412 into a peasant family during the later stages of the Hundred Years’ War. Her father, Jacques d’Arc, worked as a farmer and local official, while her mother was Isabelle Romée.

The village was also the setting for Joan’s childhood and for the beginning of the visions she later described at her trial. She grew up in a region affected by raids and political uncertainty, circumstances that formed part of her understanding of the conflict.

Domrémy is sometimes confused with Reims, where Charles VII was crowned, or Rouen, where Joan was executed. Those places became important later in her life, but neither was her birthplace. Modern references often use the name Domrémy-la-Pucelle in recognition of its association with Joan.
