Which French saint was burned at the stake in 1431 after leading an army?
Answer
Saint Joan of Arc
Answer
Saint Joan of Arc
The French saint burned at the stake in 1431 after leading an army was Saint Joan of Arc.
Joan, or Jeanne d’Arc, was a teenage peasant from Domrémy who said that divine voices had instructed her to support Charles, the French dauphin. In 1429 she helped inspire French victories, most famously the lifting of the siege of Orléans. Her success strengthened French morale and helped Charles VII reach Reims for his coronation.
Joan was captured by Burgundian forces at Compiègne in 1430 and sold to the English. An ecclesiastical court in Rouen convicted her of heresy after a politically charged trial. She was burned on May 30, 1431, at about nineteen years of age.
The original verdict was later overturned in a rehabilitation trial in 1456. Joan was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. She is sometimes confused with other French Catholic saints, but her military leadership and execution during the Hundred Years’ War uniquely identify her.
