Which French retailer originated the hypermarket format?

The story behind the answer

Carrefour originated the modern hypermarket format in France.

Carrefour opened the first Carrefour hypermarket on 15 June 1963 in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, near Paris. The large store combined a supermarket’s food selection with department-store merchandise under one roof, while offering extensive parking and a self-service layout. This combination became the defining hypermarket model.

Carrefour itself began in 1958, founded by Marcel Fournier and brothers Denis and Jacques Defforey. Its founders were influenced by American retail ideas, but Carrefour adapted them to create a particularly large European retail format. The company’s name means “crossroads” in French, reflecting the location of its first shop near a junction in Annecy.

A common mix-up is confusing the first Carrefour shop, opened in 1960, with its first hypermarket, opened three years later. Carrefour did not invent every element of large-scale self-service retail, but it is the canonical answer for the retailer credited with launching the hypermarket format in France and Europe.
