Which French fortress did Joan of Arc help capture at the Battle of the Tourelles?
Answer
Les Tourelles
Answer
Les Tourelles
Joan of Arc helped capture Les Tourelles at the Battle of the Tourelles.
Les Tourelles was a fortified bridgehead and tower complex guarding the southern approach to Orléans. It was held by the English during the siege of the city in 1429. French forces attacked it on 7 May, after Joan had entered Orléans and urged an aggressive effort against the besieging positions.
Joan was wounded during the assault, reportedly by an arrow, but returned to the fighting. The French capture of Les Tourelles helped break the English defensive system and contributed directly to the lifting of the siege on 8 May. The victory made Joan an important symbol of the French cause.
The name is often translated or rendered in several ways, including “the Tourelles” and “Les Tourelles.” It should not be confused with the larger city of Orléans itself or with the fortress at Chinon, where Joan met Charles VII before the campaign. Les Tourelles was a specific fortified position in the battle.
