Which French city’s siege did Joan of Arc help lift in 1429?
Answer
Orléans
Answer
Orléans
Joan of Arc helped lift the Siege of Orléans in 1429.
The English and their Burgundian allies had surrounded Orléans, a strategically important city on the Loire River. Joan arrived with French forces in late April 1429 and quickly became a powerful symbol of French resistance.
French troops captured several English-held positions around the city during the fighting. Joan was wounded by an arrow during the assault on Les Tourelles, but she returned to the battle. The siege was lifted on 8 May 1429, after the English abandoned their positions.
Joan did not win the battle alone, and experienced commanders directed much of the military operation. Even so, her presence, confidence, and religious mission had a major effect on morale. The victory at Orléans helped make possible Charles VII’s coronation at Reims later that year.
