Tom Ford launched Black Orchid, the debut Tom Ford perfume introduced in 2006.
Black Orchid was created during Tom Ford’s period leading the Tom Ford brand after his work in fashion at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. The perfume was developed with fragrance companies Estée Lauder, which partnered with Ford on his beauty business.
The scent is generally classified as an oriental or chypre-like floral fragrance and is known for dark floral, earthy, woody, and gourmand facets. Its name refers to the black orchid imagery used in the product’s presentation, rather than to a simple botanical extract that gives the perfume its entire character.
Black Orchid is often confused with later Tom Ford releases such as Oud Wood and Tobacco Vanille. Those fragrances belong to the Private Blend collection, while Black Orchid was positioned as a core signature fragrance and became one of the brand’s defining products.
