Which former Replacements bassist joined Guns N' Roses in 1998?

Former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson joined Guns N’ Roses in 1998.

Stinson replaced Duff McKagan, who had left Guns N’ Roses amid creative differences and a desire to spend more time with his family. Drummer Josh Freese recommended Stinson, helping bring the Minneapolis-born musician into the heavily changing lineup assembled around Axl Rose during the Chinese Democracy era.

Before Guns N’ Roses, Stinson was best known as the bassist for the Replacements. He joined that influential Minneapolis alternative-rock band as a child and played on albums including Tim and Pleased to Meet Me. After the Replacements broke up, he worked with acts such as Bash & Pop and Soul Asylum before taking the Guns N’ Roses role.

Stinson remained with Guns N’ Roses from 1998 to 2014. His bass playing appears prominently on “Oh My God” and Chinese Democracy; he played on 13 of that album’s 14 tracks. He is sometimes confused with later or former Guns N’ Roses bassists, including McKagan, but Stinson was the bassist who joined during the band’s late-1990s rebuilding period.
