Which Ford stylist is credited by Ford with suggesting the Mustang name?

The story behind the answer

Ford credited stylist John Najjar with suggesting the Mustang name.

Najjar was an executive stylist who worked on the earliest Mustang concept, the two-seat Mustang I, alongside fellow Ford stylist Philip T. Clark. He was also a fan of the North American P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft from World War II, and that association is commonly given as the inspiration behind the name.

The naming story has a competing version. Robert J. Eggert, Ford Division’s market-research manager, also said he proposed “Mustang” after receiving J. Frank Dobie’s book The Mustangs as a birthday gift from his wife. Eggert’s association with quarter horses gave the name an additional horse-related connection.

Those accounts are sometimes presented as contradictory, but the quiz’s wording matters: it asks for the Ford stylist credited with suggesting the name. That attribution is John Najjar. Joe Oros and Gale Halderman were important Mustang designers, while Larry Shinoda is associated primarily with later Chevrolet performance and design work, so they are not the best answer here.
