The Ford Transit became Europe’s best-selling van for many years after its 1965 debut.
Ford introduced the Transit in 1965 as a European commercial vehicle designed to replace separate British and German van lines. Its broad body, useful payload, and range of engines made it suitable for tradespeople, delivery companies, public services, and passenger transport.
The name became so widely recognized that “Transit” is often used in Europe as a shorthand for a panel van. Ford developed numerous versions over successive generations, including short- and long-wheelbase models, chassis cabs, minibuses, and specialized conversions.
The Transit is distinct from Ford’s North American Econoline or E-Series vans. Although those vehicles served similar purposes, the Transit name and its original development were strongly associated with Ford’s European commercial-vehicle operations.
