Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting Jimson Weed depicts a jimson weed flower.
The work is formally titled Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. It shows a large white trumpet-shaped flower against a dark background, using close-up scale to make a familiar plant appear monumental.
O'Keeffe often painted flowers at unusually large sizes. She explained that people passed flowers without really seeing them, so enlarging them gave viewers time to notice their shapes and details. The paintings were not intended simply as botanical illustrations.
Jimson Weed became especially famous after it sold for $44.4 million at auction in 2014, setting a record for the most expensive artwork by a female artist at that time. The record later changed, but the painting remains one of O'Keeffe's best-known works.
