Which five investors formed the original Dragons' Den panel in the British series?

The story behind the answer

The original British Dragons' Den panel consisted of Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Rachel Elnaugh, Simon Woodroffe and Doug Richard.

These five investors appeared in the first series, which launched on BBC Two in January 2005. They brought different commercial backgrounds and personalities to the panel, creating the mix of questioning styles that became central to the programme.

The panel did not remain unchanged. Rachel Elnaugh and Simon Woodroffe were later replaced, and subsequent series introduced investors including Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis. Later still, the programme added further entrepreneurs and business figures, so a panel seen in a modern episode may look very different from the original group.

The names are sometimes confused with later dragons because Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne remained strongly associated with the show's early years. The complete launch panel, however, includes Elnaugh, Woodroffe and Richard as well.
