Minnesota designated the walleye, Sander vitreus, as its state fish in 1965. The species is widespread in the state’s lakes and rivers and is one of the most important targets for recreational anglers there.

Walleyes have large, light-sensitive eyes that help them hunt in dim water, at dawn, dusk, and during cloudy conditions. Their eyes reflect light, producing the pale or glassy appearance that inspired the common name “walleye.”

The species is native to much of Canada and the northern and central United States. It is a close relative of the yellow perch and belongs to the family Percidae. Walleye are also economically important in commercial and recreational fisheries across North America.
