Which Finnish driver won the 1998 and 1999 Formula One World Championships?

The story behind the answer

Mika Häkkinen won the 1998 and 1999 Formula One World Championships. The Finnish McLaren driver took consecutive titles during the peak of his rivalry with Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher.

Häkkinen clinched his first championship in 1998 by winning the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. He finished the season with 100 points, ahead of Schumacher, after a campaign that included victories in the final two rounds. McLaren’s competitive MP4/13 gave Häkkinen the speed to challenge Ferrari throughout the year.

He successfully defended the title in 1999, although the season was more difficult. Ferrari’s Eddie Irvine emerged as his main rival after Schumacher suffered a leg injury at the British Grand Prix. Häkkinen again sealed the championship in Japan, winning at Suzuka and finishing with 76 points to Irvine’s 74.

Häkkinen is sometimes confused with Keke Rosberg, Finland’s first Formula One champion, or Kimi Räikkönen, another Finnish champion. Häkkinen’s two titles remain central to Finland’s Formula One legacy.
