Ari Vatanen won the 1981 World Rally Championship and later won the Dakar Rally four times.
Vatanen captured the 1981 WRC drivers’ title in a Ford Escort RS1800, driving for the semi-private Rothmans Rally Team. His championship was historically notable because a privateer team had won the drivers’ title, an exceptional achievement in an era increasingly shaped by factory operations.
After a severe 1985 Rally Argentina crash and a long recovery, Vatanen returned to major competition. He won the Dakar Rally in 1987, 1989, and 1990 for Peugeot, then added a fourth victory in 1991 with Citroën. The 1988 Dakar is a common source of confusion: Vatanen was leading when his Peugeot was stolen, and he did not win that edition.
Vatanen’s WRC title and Dakar successes belong to different phases of his career. Hannu Mikkola and Juha Kankkunen were also Finnish rally stars, but neither matches this exact combination of achievements.
