Which driver was the first to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

The story behind the answer

A.J. Foyt was the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Foyt completed the trio across three iconic races and multiple disciplines. He won the Indianapolis 500 four times—1961, 1964, 1967, and 1977—then captured the Daytona 500 in 1972, NASCAR’s most prestigious stock-car race.

His Le Mans breakthrough came in 1967, when he shared a Ford GT40 Mark IV with Dan Gurney. Foyt and Gurney delivered an all-American victory, and Foyt became the only driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans in the same year.

The achievement is easy to confuse with other legends because Gurney was Foyt’s Le Mans co-driver, while Mario Andretti and Al Unser also won major American races. But neither matched Foyt’s specific combination of Indy, Daytona, and Le Mans victories.
