In March 1901, financier J. P. Morgan agreed to provide Tesla with $150,000 to develop a wireless station on Long Island. The facility, built at Shoreham, became known as Wardenclyffe and was intended to send wireless messages across the Atlantic and to ships at sea.

Tesla’s plans expanded after construction began. He wanted Wardenclyffe to support a much more ambitious system involving worldwide wireless communication and the transmission of electrical power. The larger vision required substantially more money than the original agreement provided.

Morgan declined Tesla’s later requests for additional funding, and Wardenclyffe never became an operational commercial system. Construction continued for several years, but financial problems led to abandonment around 1906. The tower was eventually demolished for scrap in 1917. Morgan’s role was financial backing, not ownership of the tower’s engineering concept.
