On what exact date was Nikola Tesla born?

Nikola Tesla was born on 10 July 1856. His birthplace was Smiljan, a village in the Austrian Empire’s Military Frontier that is now in Croatia.

Tesla was born into a family of ethnic Serbs. His father, Milutin Tesla, was an Eastern Orthodox priest, while his mother, Georgina “Đuka” Mandić, was known for her practical inventions and exceptional memory. Tesla later credited her influence for some of his own abilities.

The date is sometimes confused with Tesla’s death date, 7 January 1943. Another common mix-up comes from calendar systems: 10 July 1856 in the modern Gregorian calendar corresponded to 28 June in the Julian calendar then used locally. Tesla later became famous for his alternating-current inventions, induction motor and wireless-power experiments.
