Answer
Military Frontier scholarship
A Military Frontier scholarship helped Tesla enroll at the Imperial-Royal Technical College in Graz.
Tesla entered the college in 1875 after growing up in the former Military Frontier, a Habsburg border region where his father served as an Orthodox priest. The scholarship made advanced technical education possible and helped place him at one of the leading engineering schools in the region. In Graz, he initially distinguished himself academically, reportedly passing nine examinations in his first year.
The scholarship is easy to confuse with later American associations in Tesla’s life. The Franklin Institute did honor him much later, and Thomas Edison was a professional rival and employer, but neither provided this Graz funding. “Royal Serbian scholarship” is also misleading: Tesla was born in the Austrian Empire, not in the Kingdom of Serbia.
Tesla did not complete the course. His performance declined during his later years, and he left Graz in December 1878. Even without graduating, the college exposed him to advanced electrical theory and machinery that influenced his subsequent work on alternating-current systems.
