Which field develops computer programs to analyze raw genome sequence data?

The story behind the answer

Bioinformatics develops computer programs and methods to analyze raw genome sequence data.

Genome sequencing produces enormous strings of DNA letters that are difficult to interpret manually. Bioinformatics combines biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to assemble sequence fragments, compare genomes, locate genes, identify variants, and annotate biological features. During and after the HGP, computer programs became essential because the data volume exceeded what conventional laboratory analysis could handle.

A central task is genome annotation: identifying genes, regulatory regions, repeats, and other features in a sequence. Bioinformatics tools also support read alignment, variant calling, gene-expression analysis, evolutionary comparisons, and visualization through resources such as GenBank, the UCSC Genome Browser, and Ensembl.

The distractors describe neighboring fields but not the best answer. Epidemiology studies disease patterns in populations, cytogenetics examines chromosomes, and proteomics studies the complete set of proteins. Bioinformatics can support all three areas, but it is the field specifically focused on computational analysis of genomic data.
