Which Japanese institute was listed among the main public HGP sequencing centers?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese institute listed among the main public Human Genome Project sequencing centers was RIKEN.

RIKEN, formally the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, is Japan’s national research organization. Its Genomic Sciences Center participated in the international public sequencing effort alongside centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and China.

The other choices were also real genome institutions, but they belonged to different countries or organizations. Baylor College of Medicine and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are in the United States, while Genoscope is a French sequencing center. RIKEN is therefore the only Japanese choice.

The HGP depended on a distributed network rather than one laboratory decoding the genome alone. International centers produced sequence data, developed mapping and sequencing methods, and contributed to the reference assembly. The public project was declared complete in 2003, although later work filled remaining difficult regions.
