Quidditch is the fictional sport created by J.K. Rowling and played on broomsticks in the Harry Potter series.
A Quidditch match normally involves two teams of seven players. Players use broomsticks and several balls: a Quaffle for scoring, two Bludgers that disrupt play, and a Golden Snitch that Seeker players try to catch.
The sport’s unusual scoring system is central to its identity. A Quaffle goal is worth 10 points, while catching the Golden Snitch is worth 150 points and usually ends the match. Because the Snitch can dramatically change the score, catching it does not always guarantee victory.
Rowling has said the idea came partly from a game she invented after an argument with a boyfriend. In the wizarding world, Quidditch has an organized history, professional teams, and international competitions. In the real world, universities and sports organizations later adapted the concept into a non-magical game.
