J.K. Rowling places Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the center of the Harry Potter series. Hogwarts is the British wizarding school attended by Harry Potter and many of his closest friends.
The school is located in Scotland within the fictional world and is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Students generally begin their magical education at age eleven and remain for seven years. The school provides the main setting for lessons, friendships, rivalries, mysteries, and several major battles.
Hogwarts is not the only magical school in the wider universe. Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute appear in connection with the Triwizard Tournament, while Ilvermorny is a North American school described in later wizarding-world material. Those institutions are distinct from Rowling’s central British school.
