Kanto is the fictional region where the original Pokémon Red and Blue video games take place.
Players begin their journey in Pallet Town and travel through cities, routes, caves, forests, and islands while challenging eight Gym Leaders. After defeating the Elite Four and the rival, the player can become the Pokémon League Champion. The region's layout provides the setting for the first 151 Pokémon and the original Pokédex quest.
Kanto is based on Japan's real Kantō region, although the game's geography is simplified and rearranged for exploration. The name Kanto was not used prominently in the first-generation story itself; it became clearer in later games, especially when Pokémon Gold and Silver allowed players to revisit the original area.
The region contains important locations such as Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, Saffron City, Cinnabar Island, and the Indigo Plateau. Kanto should not be confused with Johto, the neighboring region introduced in the second generation.
