Which Pokémon generation first introduced Pokémon breeding and held items?

The story behind the answer

Generation II first introduced Pokémon breeding and held items.

These mechanics debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver, released for the Game Boy Color. Breeding allowed compatible Pokémon to produce Eggs at the Pokémon Day Care, creating a new way to obtain Pokémon and pass down certain traits or moves.

Held items gave Pokémon additional strategic options. A Pokémon could carry an item into battle, where it might restore health, strengthen a move type, or trigger another effect. This expanded battle planning beyond moves, levels, and species matchups.

Generation II also added the Johto region, 100 new Pokémon, a real-time day-and-night system, and the Dark and Steel types. Pokémon Crystal later served as an enhanced version of Gold and Silver. Because breeding and held items became standard features, players sometimes remember them as original concepts, but they were absent from the first-generation games.
