In J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, Quenya is an Elvish language spoken by Elves.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s major constructed languages. He based aspects of its sound and structure on languages such as Finnish, while developing its vocabulary and grammar for the history of Middle-earth. It is associated especially with the High Elves and the peoples of Valinor.
Tolkien did not invent only one language. Sindarin is another important Elvish language, more widely used in parts of Middle-earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings. Quenya often has a formal, ancient, or ceremonial role in the stories.
The term Quenya can therefore refer both to a language and to an entire tradition of Tolkien’s linguistic world-building. It is not the language of Dwarves, Hobbits, or Orcs, although Tolkien created distinctive linguistic material for several peoples.
