Which fictional planet is visited in C. S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra?
Answer
Perelandra
Answer
Perelandra
The fictional planet visited in C. S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra is Perelandra.
Perelandra, published in 1943, is the second novel in Lewis’s Ransom Trilogy, also called the Space Trilogy. The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, travels from Earth to the planet Perelandra, which is identified with Venus. There he encounters a newly created world, its Green Lady, and a struggle involving temptation and the future of intelligent life.
The novel follows Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, and precedes That Hideous Strength, published in 1945. The trilogy combines planetary romance, Christian theology, mythology, and philosophical speculation rather than functioning as straightforward modern science fiction.
A frequent confusion concerns the names of Lewis’s imagined worlds. Malacandra is the name used for Mars in Out of the Silent Planet, while Perelandra is the Venus-like setting of the second book. Narnia belongs to a separate fantasy series, and Glome is the setting of Till We Have Faces.
