Malacandra is the fictional planet invaded in C.S. Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet.
The novel, published in 1938, follows Elwin Ransom after he is kidnapped and taken into space. His captors intend to offer him to inhabitants of Malacandra, which they call Mars. Lewis uses the planet to build an imagined society with several intelligent species and a moral order very different from that of Earth.
In Lewis’s fictional cosmology, Earth is called Thulcandra, the “silent planet,” because it has become spiritually isolated from the wider community of worlds. Malacandra is therefore not a synonym for Earth or Narnia. Perelandra is the setting of the second book in the trilogy, while Malacandra belongs specifically to the first volume.
