J.R.R. Tolkien created Quenya as a language spoken by the Elves.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s best-developed Elvish languages. Within his fictional history, it originated among the Elves of Valinor and was associated especially with the Ñoldor and other high Elves. Tolkien based aspects of its sound and structure on languages he studied, particularly Finnish, while also giving it its own grammar and vocabulary.
Quenya is not simply a generic word for every Elvish speech in Tolkien’s legendarium. Sindarin is another major Elvish language, and the two have different histories and uses. In The Lord of the Rings, Quenya often appears in formal names, songs, and ceremonial language. Tolkien’s interest in constructed languages began long before publication of his major novels, and language creation remained central to the development of his imagined histories.
