In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo’s sword is named Sting.
Bilbo finds the blade in a troll-hoard alongside two larger swords, Glamdring and Orcrist. Because the sword is small enough for a human-sized person to use, it suits a hobbit particularly well. Bilbo gives it the name Sting after it glows blue when orcs are nearby in Mirkwood.
Bilbo later gives Sting to Frodo Baggins, who carries it during the quest to destroy the One Ring. The blade’s blue light becomes a useful warning of approaching orcs and other enemies. Readers sometimes confuse Sting with Glamdring, Gandalf’s sword, or Orcrist, Thorin Oakenshield’s sword; all three come from the same troll cache.
Sting is not one of the great swords forged in Gondolin, but it is an important Elvish blade with a history connected to that ancient city. Its small size and distinctive glow make it one of Tolkien’s best-known named weapons.
