Mount Doom is the fictional mountain whose fire destroys the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien gives the mountain the Sindarin name Orodruin, meaning “Mountain of Blazing Heat,” and places it in the land of Mordor. Its volcanic fires were used by Sauron to forge the Ring in the Second Age.
Because the Ring could be unmade only in the fire where it was created, Mount Doom becomes the destination of Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. Frodo reaches the Cracks of Doom, but the Ring’s destruction ultimately depends on Gollum’s final intervention.
Mount Doom is sometimes confused with other prominent peaks in Middle-earth, including Caradhras near Moria. Caradhras blocks the Fellowship’s route, but it has no role in forging or destroying the Ring.
