Masyaf is the fictional medieval fortress that serves as the Assassin Brotherhood's headquarters in the first Assassin's Creed game.
Altaïr returns to Masyaf after missions across the Levant, and the fortress functions as the Brotherhood's central base. It is presented as a mountain settlement in the region of Syria and is led by Al Mualim, the Mentor who directs Altaïr's missions during the game.
Masyaf is inspired by the real Syrian town and castle of the same name, which has historical associations with the Nizari Ismaili state. The game adapts that history into its fictional Assassin mythology rather than offering a literal documentary account.
Alamut is another fortress associated with the historical Nizari Ismailis and appears elsewhere in Assassin's Creed lore, but it is not the headquarters answer for the first game. Monteriggioni is Ezio's Italian base, while Castel Sant'Angelo is a Roman landmark in later entries.
