Which fictional magizoologist did J.K. Rowling create as the protagonist of Fantastic Beasts?

The story behind the answer

Newt Scamander is the fictional magizoologist created by J.K. Rowling as the protagonist of Fantastic Beasts.

Newt first appears as the credited author of the fictional textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which Harry Potter uses at Hogwarts. Rowling later wrote the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, released as a 2016 film, with Newt as its central character. He is played by Eddie Redmayne in the film series.

Newt’s profession is magizoology, the study and care of magical creatures. The Fantastic Beasts films expand the wizarding world beyond Harry’s school years and move the action to locations including New York. Newt is sometimes confused with Rubeus Hagrid, another creature-loving character, but Hagrid is Hogwarts’ gamekeeper and a separate figure.
