Quenya is the fictional language associated especially with the Noldor Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major Elvish languages of Middle-earth. It was inspired in part by the sounds and structures of languages he admired, particularly Finnish, Latin, and Greek, while remaining an original constructed language with its own grammar and vocabulary.
Quenya is often described within the stories as an ancient or high-language of the Elves. Sindarin, another major Elvish language, became more widely spoken among many Elves in Middle-earth. Readers sometimes treat the two names as interchangeable, but Tolkien gave them different histories, forms, and social roles in his fictional world.
